Welcome to Marin Community Music School, where community members of all ages enjoy opportunities to study, play, and perform music in a wide range of styles.
Our school began in 2009 as String Letter Music School, a teaching lab where Acoustic Guitar magazine developed new method books and materials. In 2011, our founders re-established the school as a non-profit public benefit corporation under its current name, Marin Community Music School.
Our mission is to provide music instruction, coaching, ensemble, and performance opportunities for community members of all ages and musical interests on a first-come, first-served basis, without regard to means, income, or any otherwise limiting factor.
We believe that making music is an important part of everyday life, and encourage interested students of all ages to learn a new instrument, rekindle musical skills from years past, or develop their already considerable skills to a higher level of artistic excellence. Our faculty is experienced with teaching students of all skill levels, as well as offering instruction in several styles of music.
We help our students become lifelong musicians by reinforcing their innate love of music, acquainting them with vital musical traditions, and teaching them the basic technical skills of their chosen instrument along with music reading.
We encourage our students to be excellent listeners, so they can confidently play with others and also teach themselves to sing and play what they hear.
Making music is a social activity as well as a means of personal expression. Starting at the beginner level, and continuing throughout our curriculum, we emphasize the value and importance of playing with, and performing for, others.
